Student Life Project
FAQs
General Project Questions
- What is this project for?
This project is being done via a colloquim class in the Department of History. The participants will spend up to three semesters (two classes and some independent study) creating this book.
- Who is in charge of this group?
Dr. Michael Batinski is the faculty teacher of record for this course. However, this course is unique because of the large amount of input and guidance the students enrolled in this class are providing.
- What exactly is the project?
We are creating a pictorial history of student life at SIU Carbondale. Our time frame is roughly the 1940's (World War II era) through the 1990's. Working with Arcadia Publishing, the end result will be a book, available for purchase, describing campus life. This will be a part of Arcadia's Campus History series.
- What do you want from me?
Pictures! Pictures! Pictures! We would appreciate your pictures and stories of your time at SIU Carbondale.
- What kind of pictures do you want?
Anything and everything that shows some aspect of your life here at SIU Carbondale.
Picture Submission Questions
- How should I get my pictures to you?
You can email them to us or send them to us regular post to this address:

Southern Illinois University
Mailcode 4519
Carbondale, IL 62901
- What format should I email my pictures to you in?
We prefer them to be in any of the following formats: JPEGs (.jpg or .jpeg), GIFs (.gif) or Bitmap (.bmp).
- What if I don't have an electronic version of my pictures, but don't want to give you my originals?
You may either have them scanned (Wal-mart, Walgreens, Kinkos, etc have the capability to scan your prints into electronic form) or you can mail them to us. We will be happy to scan them and return the originals to you.
- Can't I just photocopy my pictures and send them to you?
Because this book is a pictorial history, the quality of the photos is especailly important. Reproduced (photocopied) images are not useable because of how poorly they will reproduce in the book.
- What are you going to do with my photos?
Once we have published this book, the images we received, along with all of our research material, will be housed in Special Collections at Morris Library for future generations to access and use.
- Don't you have to have my permission to use my photos?
Absolutely! That is why we need you to complete the forms and submit them to us. This gives us rights to use the photographs as part of our project and gives copyright for future use to Special Collections.
